This article evaluates the bearing capacity of shallow foundations in soils derived from volcanic ash under conditions of partial saturation, explicitly incorporating the effect of matrix suction on the mechanical behavior of the soil. Based on experimental results and the analysis of relevant geotechnical parameters, the influence of the degree of saturation on the shear strength and ultimate bearing capacity of shallow footings is examined. The study compares saturated and partially saturated conditions, showing significant increases in bearing capacity associated with the presence of suction, as well as variations in failure mechanisms. The results highlight the importance of considering the actual saturation state of the soil in geotechnical design, particularly in deposits of volcanic origin, where unsaturated conditions are common. The work provides technical elements that contribute to a more realistic and reliable assessment of the performance of shallow foundations in this type of material.
