Climate change: what is the role of higher education in Colombia?

This article reflects on the role and responsibility of universities in addressing climate change, emphasizing the historical evolution of higher education, the fragmentation of knowledge, and its consequences on environmental awareness. It argues that universities must reform curricula and methodologies to foster integral professionals capable of protecting biodiversity and promoting sustainable technological development. The discussion also highlights the need for a transdisciplinary approach that links science, society, and environmental ethics to tackle the ongoing climate crisis. The reflection is based on a documentary review of sources published between 2008 and 2022, complemented by the author’s academic experience in higher education, which allows integrating theory and practice within the Colombian context. The paper proposes recommendations to reorient higher education toward models that strengthen environmental responsibility, promote sustainability as a transversal principle in university programs, and align teaching and research with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), reinforcing universities as key agents of transformation.
