Abstract

The global energy transition requires power systems that are increasingly flexible, resilient, and capable of integrating high levels of variable renewable generation. In this context, hydropower continues to play a strategic role as a backup technology to ensure the stability of the power grid. In Latin America, where more than 50% of hydropower plants have exceeded their design life, the modernization of existing assets represents a technical, economic, and environmental opportunity to increase system reliability without requiring major infrastructure developments. This article provides an overview of the role of hydropower repowering, the rehabilitation of existing plants, and pumped-storage hydropower (PSH) as key solutions for strengthening energy security, increasing operational efficiency, and facilitating the large-scale integration of renewable energy. It also highlights international projects carried out by Andritz Hydro and analyzes the prospects for Latin America within the new global energy landscape.
